Description

A lithograph depicting Strauss’s ‘The Waltz of the Voices of Spring’, created around 1913 by Marianne Hitschmann-Steinberger (1877–1919). We see a young satyr dancing with a young woman, an allegory of spring. She is naked, her long hair swirling in the wind, creating a sense of lightness. This dreamlike world is accompanied below by a score of the waltz ‘Frühlingsstimmen’ by Johann Strauss II (1825 Vienna – Vienna 1899). This lithograph is part of a series of ten engravings published in 1913 by Marianne Hitschmann-Steinberger.

Signed in pencil: ‘Marianne Hitschmann-Steinberger’.

Marianne Hitschmann-Steinberger was a Jewish artist born in Austria in 1877. She studied with the Vienna Secession artists Adolf Böhm and Friedrich König. She is known for her bookplates, and her illustrations for postcards and children’s books. She died at the age of just 42 from pneumonia.
