A silver French curon goblet

A silver French curon goblet made in Paris in 1764-1765 for the Marseille-based engraver Jacques François Lioncy. This goblet is tulip-shaped but lacks a stem, which explains its nickname, “cul-rond” (for “round-bottom”). Engraved in the center is a coat of arms surmounted by a Latin motto: “SIGILLUM MASSILAE” (Seal of Marseille). The upper rim bears an inscription detailing the date, the name of the person who commissioned it, and the name of the owner: “Given by the city to Mr. Jaq-Fran-Lioncy by resolution of June 15th“.
