Description
A late 18th-century canivet featuring the Flagellation of Christ, painted in gouache on paper. The title of the work is inscribed in a cartouche at the bottom: “Flagelatio Christi”. A canivet is a devotional image handmade by nuns; lace-like patterns are cut into a sheet of paper using a small knife. A religious scene is then painted in the center of the cutout.
