A Niderviller faience statuette depicting a shepherd with a sheepskin, Count de Custine, made circa 1780.
There are still several representations of the shepherd with the sheepskin today.
The treatment of faces and clothing differs from one copy to another; the color of the jacket in this copy features Cassius purple (Andreas Cassius, 1605-1673) or purple gold. A complex and expensive color, achieved by precipitating fine gold particles onto tin oxide particles and using the low-fire technique (750°C) for color firing (second firing).
