Pocket sundial with an integrated compass

A pocket sundial with an integrated compass, made between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The decoration — an engraving with watercolor on paper — is applied to the wooden core. This tool allows the user to determine orientation using the compass, and thus the time using the sundial, which is oriented towards south. On the lid, a list of cities in Europe and North America indicates their latitude, to be then used on the dial.

Signed “Stockert à Bavaria” for Ernst Christoph Stockert (1746-1811) or Johann Paul Stockert (1775-1835), who were active in Fürth, near Nuremberg in Bavaria, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
