A door knocker with its wrought iron plate. The long plate has an “S” profile with asymmetrically worked openwork interlacing at the top. The surface is engraved with grooves on an amatized background evoking acanthus leaves. The knocker repeats this decoration on the edges of a ring from which three pairs of scrolls emerge outwards at the top, bottom and middle inwards. A palmette is engraved on the percussion weight.
A very similar door hammer is reproduced in Hans Haug’s La ferronnerie strasbourgeoise au dix-septième et dix-huitième siècle, published in 1633 by A et F KAHN, Paris et Strasbourg, Pl. XVI, ill. a. In both cases, the engraving of the lock plate can be found on Alsatian cabinet locks and hinges dating from the 17th century.
