An engraving by François Jacques Oberthür, view of Strasbourg Cathedral, 1819.
An engraving by François Jacques Oberthür (1793-1863) presenting a slanted view of Strasbourg Cathedral from the South side. The marquetry is signed “F. Oberthür fecit” in the lower left corner. The work is completed by an indication, in the center of its lower part, “CATHÉDRALE DE STRASBOURG, se vend chez J. J. Guttermann Relieur, Rue de l’Hôpital N°3 à Strasbourg – 1819″ (“STRASBOURG CATHEDRAL, sold at J. J. Guttermann Bookbinder, Hospital Street No. 3 in Strasbourg – 1819”).
This engraving of the cathedral presents the crossing tower of the transept with its terrace rebuilt following the fire of July 27, 1759. Jacques-François Blondel, in 1762, did not restore the Gothic “mitre” but covered the crossing with a simple truncated pyramid framework, completed in 1765. The crossing is presented topped with the Chappe telegraph.
