Description
A grey stoneware beer mug with a tin lid, made in Betschdorf in Alsace. The slightly conical body is highlighted in the lower and upper parts by three rings. The middle of the pitcher is engraved with a blue 6-pointed star. This star, although similar to the famous Star of David, here has no connection with it. It is the star of the brewers; an ancient alchemist symbol dating back to the Middle Ages in the community of brewers and maltsters. It is often found in Alsace or in Germanic countries on signs or places where beer is sold, such as above the door of 24 A Grand’Rue in Strasbourg.
