Pharmacy jars, 19th century

A pair of porcelain medicine jars, decorated with intertwined snakes, made in Paris circa 1820-1840.

In Antiquity, the snake has a symbolism closely linked with health and healing. Through its moults, it symbolises both regeneration and the renewal of life. It is also a symbol of knowledge, since one must be initiated to collect its poison, which is both beneficial and dangerous… On the first pot is written in golden letters: “Pill. Chalyb”, and on the second one: “Pill. Ben.Full”.
