Bronze with brown patina edition of sculptor Antonin Mercié’s David cast by Maison Barbedienne.
As the biblical episode recounts, David won his duel against Goliath: the young shepherd is putting back his sword in its sheath, one foot resting on the giant’s head lying on the ground. David’s naked contrapposto stance and his slender and gracious adolescent body are strongly reminiscent of Donatello’s David bronze.
Moreover, the plaster model had granted him the first-class medal at the 1872 Salon. The artwork rapidly underwent numerous editions in four formats by the Maison Barbedienne, a major player in the diffusion of sculpture in the 19th century. This is the 46 centimeters high version.
Period : late 19th century
