Description

A framed painting on wood panel presenting the Virgin and Child. The Virgin is wearing red and seems to wrap the Child with white drapery (linked to the notion of purity). She looks up, as a sign of recognition to the Lord for her immaculate conception. The frame is made of wood and painted in a golden color.

This iconography was used as a model multiple times. Probably inspired by the Virgin and Child of Rubens in 1615 (Ermitage Museum), Antoon Van Dyck made different versions of this theme but modified the look of the Virgin by directing it towards the Lord. Our painting is a copy of Van Dyck’s, thus testifying its popularity among the XVII and the XVIII th centuries.
