Description
A hand–painted Swedish chopping board for flax (SKÄKTETRÄ) made of wood, featuring floral patterns and a polychrome crown below the handle.
On the top part of the object, there are inscriptions painted in red: “ANNI.SOFFI.HANKANS 1847″. This is the surname of Annia Soffia Hakkans, who received this decorative cutting board as a wedding gift. A wooden tool formerly used to scutch hemp or flax, as well as to separate the tow from the straw.
The worker who scutches holds a handful of flax
in the left hand and pass it through the notch in the board, which is cut at an angle, then with a polished wooden knife called an “écangue” or “écang” that the worker hold in the right hand.
It involves striking the linen vertically to detach all the chevenotte and soften the fiber, taking care to roll the handle overitself
