Thomas Hovenden was an Irish-American painter known for his realistic genre scenes. Trained in Ireland and the United States, he settled in France between 1874 and 1880 where he studied with Alexandre Cabanel in Paris and stayed in Pont-Aven. Thomas Hovenden appears in the illustrated catalogues of the Salons of 1879 and 1880, published by F.-G. DUMAS.
The work is signed “Hovenden” on the left side, and dated 1880.
