Trained in Ireland and the United States, he settled in France between 1874 and 1880 where he studied with Alexandre Cabanel in Paris and stayed in Pont-Aven. Thomas Hovenden appears in the illustrated catalogues of the Salons of 1879 and 1880, published by F.-G.
